“The essence of my grandfather’s amazing story is not just that he emigrated to the United States, but that he had been kidnapped from his shtetl at the age of 14 by Cossacks. He had been conscripted into the Czar’s Imperial Army for a term of 18–20 years, which was not uncommon for Jewish boys in the 19th century.”
