B'ruchim Habayim to Riverdale Temple! Where everyone is ALWAYS welcome!

Riverdale Temple is located in the Riverdale section of the Bronx.  It is the oldest and the only congregation in the
community affiliated with the Union for Reform Judaism.  Our members come from the New York City area and lower Westchester. At Riverdale Temple everyone is welcome to participate in temple life, no matter what their approach to Judaism or degree of
Jewish literacy. The temple is founded on the principles of faith, mitzvot and tikkun olam "and the study of Torah leads to them all." Riverdale Temple offers commmunal support for your laughter and tears. We are an inclusive, welcoming community of Jewish and interfaith families, young and old, married and single.  We are also welcoming to all lifestyle choices.

Come and join us in our beautiful sanctuary which sets a peaceful, meditative tone for worship. We have a rich, diverse and evolving musical tradition that embraces different styles.  We are egalitarian in our approach to leadership and worship.  Children are welcome at all services. Most of all, we are a caring congregation, small and intimate yet not intrusive.

COME GROW WITH US!                         NOW MORE THAN EVER!

New Religious School Curriculum

Welcome to the 5771 Riverdale Temple Religious School Year!

This year we have modified our curriculum to communicate more clearly to our children the basics of Judaism in general, and the specific commitments of Reform Judaism as the earliest religious response to the modern age.

Students who complete our entire program will understand:

  • The basic concepts and values of each holiday and life-cycle ceremony and the rituals that accompany it.
  • The major events of Jewish history from the Bible to today.
  • The values that define modern Judaism and how they have evolved from biblical times.
  • What it means to be a Reform Jew today, and how to make responsible Jewish choices about how to observe mitzvoth.
  • How to read any printed, vocalized Hebrew text, and what basic words and phrases mean.

Introducing Cantorial Student Aviva Kolet

Aviva Kolet is thrilled to be Riverdale Temple's new Cantorial Intern.  A third year Cantorial student at Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion, Aviva is originally from Ottawa, Ontario, but comes from a family of Bene Israel Jews from India.  In 2005, she completed a Bachelor's degree in Classical Vocal Performance. Immediately following that, Aviva completed a Master's Degree in Choral Conducting.  After spending years teaching and conducting secular music, Aviva made the decision to marry her passion for music with her passion for Judaism, and applied to Cantorial school.  She has extensive experience working with children, and loves to teach.    Aviva is looking forward to bringing her love for choral music to the adult and youth choirs at Riverdale Temple, and is excited to lead services with vibrant new music.  When she is not teaching or leading services, Aviva is enjoying her new life in the big city and spending time with friends and family.
