3:00 PM - 5:00 PMRiverdale Temple BallroomCELEBRATING LADINO MUSIC
Most of us are more familiar with Jewish music that was developed out of the Ashkenazi traditions of Eastern Europe. Not as often performed, is the Ladino music emerging out of the Sephardic Jewish world. That history is integrated with the musical heritage that Sephardic Jews brought with them to other parts of the world in 1492 following their expulsion from Spain and Portugal. As they migrated, Sephardim carried with them their culture, traditions, and Ladino (or Judeo-Spanish) language.
Rooted in the vibrant folk traditions of Sephardic Jews and shaped by centuries of migration, Sephardic Art Song offers a distinctive and rarely heard voice within the Western classical tradition. In this lecture—recital, mezzo-soprano and scholar Dr. Lori Şen invites audiences into the rich sound world of Ladino—a language and musical culture infused with echoes of Turkish, Arabic, Greek, and Iberian influences encountered throughout the Sephardic diaspora.
Register no later than Monday, March 9, so that we have enough time to order adequate food for the event.
