Adult Education

The Adult Education program at Riverdale Temple has the task of advancing adult Jewish learning opportunities in the congregation. The committee's goal is to encourage the desire for study and learning and to afford relevant, engaging, dynamic opportunities for adult learners of all ages to participate in such study.

Adult education offers courses including Bible study, archaeology, Hebrew, Jewish history and literature, Jewish case law, Jewish philosophy, and Jewish music with choral singing.

While the rabbi and cantor are the major source of teaching expertise, we consider many other educational resources, including members of the congregation with specialized areas of expertise, guest lecturers, scholars-in-residence, and rabbinical students.

The Adult Education Committee remains open to input from the congregation for course offerings. Planning for the fall is in progress now, so call the temple at 718-548-3800 Ext. 1 to submit course suggestions and for sign up and scheduling information. Adult Education classes are scheduled on Wednesday evenings, are free and are open to all members of the community.

 Study with the Rabbi Series

Beginning in tba  our popular Study with the Rabbi series will return. We will meet with the rabbi in the
social hall from 11:00 a.m. until noon the first Thursday of each month, and we will study Torah and
other topics of Jewish interest. All congregants are welcome to join us.

Rabbi Lewis recommends the following site for further information regarding jewish learning

Chavurah

Chavurah,  which means "friends" in Hebrew, is a lay-led discussion group that meets once a month after the Saturday
morning service.  We read that week's parashah in its entirety and engage in an open discussion of its meaning, in its time,
and today.  Before our Torah study, we share a potluck pareve lunch.  You are welcome to bring a dish to share with the
group, but don't be deterred of you cannot, or decide to drop in at the last minute.  There is always enough food to go around.

Next Chavurah meeting will be September 13 following Shabbat service.  We will read and discuss the Book of Amos.

NEW! NEW! NEW! MUSIC CHAVURAH

Music Chavurah on TBA

For anyone who wants to join in the music at services but doesn’t know when or how, come
to the Music Chavurah. In an attempt to meet the scheduling needs of more congregants, the
Music Chavurah will meet on Friday evenings at 7:00 p.m. each Friday
except when Kabbalat
Shabbat is scheduled. Dates TBA

Under the direction of Cantor Leslie Friedlander, two of our musical congregants—Jim Fogel
and Michael Griffel—will teach the melodies of the service music, not only those pieces that
are sung at almost every service, but also those that will be sung specifically at the next
Shabbat services. Come if you’ve ever wanted to sing along at services and don’t worry about
stage fright: this is not a performing choir, but a chance to learn how to sing the music of the
service from the pews.
