Rabbi Judith S. Lewis became the rabbi of Riverdale Temple in the summer of 2006, after having served for 14 years as the Senior Rabbi of Temple Israel of the City of New York. She began her tenure at Temple Israel as the Director of Education for six years.
Rabbi Lewis celebrated her 25th year in the rabbinate in 2005, earning an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from the Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion, where she was ordained in 1980. She was part of the first generation of women rabbis, becoming ordained at a time when there were fewer than a dozen women in the Reform rabbinate. Her undergraduate degree was in Philosophy, from Oberlin College in Ohio.
Rabbi Lewis was born and raised in Rochester, New York where her extended family participated in every congregation of every denomination. One of her favorite recollections from childhood is the observance of Jewish holidays at each congregation successively. Once services ended at her family’s Reform synagogue, they would often go to join her grandparents in their Conservative congregation as their services concluded, and finally join aunts and uncles at the Orthodox synagogue to finish the celebration of the holiday.
The diversity and proximity of the Jewish population in Riverdale is both familiar and welcome to Rabbi Lewis who believes that a Reform congregation has a vital role to play in the ongoing creativity of modern Jewish life. As the oldest Jewish institution in Riverdale, this congregation has a rich and noteworthy heritage of involvement with the community which she looks forward to promoting and sustaining.
Rabbi Lewis is available to meet with prospective congregants to provide additional information about our congregation and help you identify and pursue the many ways in which synagogue affiliation can enrich your Jewish life. We hope that you will become an active and integral part of our community and enjoy the spiritual, intellectual and social resources Riverdale Temple can offer you.

Families with preschoolers and those who attended Dana Heller’s bat mitzvah have already met our new student cantor, Inbal Sharett, and she has won their hearts. With her guitar, named “Chocolate,” Inbal has been leading our Tot Shabbat celebrations, and more than once a young child has approached Rabbi Lewis at a regular service to ask, plaintively, “where’s Inbal?”
Our serious musicians will also be delighted with Inbal’s classical background. A third-year student at the Hebrew Union College, Inbal received her B.A.(cum laude) from Brooklyn College, in voice. She also majored in vocal performance at the Jerusalem Academy of Music of Hebrew University in Jerusalem and studied musicology at Tel Aviv University. Inbal has served numerous reform congregations in the Metropolitan area. She also fulfilled her military service in the Israeli Air Force.
Inbal's first service with us will be Kabbalat Shabbat Friday Sept. 7th at 6:45 p.m. On Saturday Sept. 8th at 7:00 p.m. Inbal will offer a musical program of Israeli songs. The program will be followed by Selichot service.
This program and service is open to the public.
